Murder

On 29 November 2006 we published our report on Murder, Manslaughter and Infanticide.  A press release and a press briefing note are available.

An "EasyRead" version [PDF] of the report is available.

Background

In our 2004 report, Partial Defences to Murder (LC290), we described the current law on murder as "a mess" and recommended a complete review of the law of murder. In October 2004, the Home Office announced that such a review would take place.

This was confirmed on 21 July 2005, when Home Office Minister Fiona MacTaggart announced the terms of reference of a comprehensive review of murder law.

On 20 December 2005 we published our provisional proposals for reforming the law of murder.  Responses to the Consultation Paper and the Overview ended on 13 April 2006.  We consulted with, among others, the public, criminal justice practitioners, academics and those who work with victims' families.   Press release

A paper on comparative studies of murder in overseas jurisdictions is also available.

NOTE - We are happy to provide information about our projects. However, we cannot give legal advice or deal with individual cases. Nor do we help with student assignments.
