Railways (Rates and Charges)

Current project status

In our consultation paper we propose the repeal of more than 40 obsolete Acts relating to the charges levied on railway freight traffic in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The railways were operated by private companies and these Acts were an attempt by Government to regulate the charges for transporting railway freight.  These charging arrangements became obsolete following the railway grouping arrangements of the early 1920s.

Most of the railways affected by these charges were in England and Wales, though a few were in Scotland and in areas that today form part of the Republic of Ireland.

The closing date for comments is 4 September 2009.
